She opens the ledger to clear the debt, and learns she cannot pay it in money.
A structural read of the draft you already have
The beats come from your chapters, not from a template you fill in. Familiar tells you what is on the page, and you decide what to change.
Every beat, in order
Where each turn happens, and what it does.
Each beat names its chapter, sums up what happens, and says what job it does in the story: inciting incident, decision point, revelation, crisis, climax. A novel usually comes back with 20 to 30 beats, with at least one in every chapter.
- Chapter location for every beat
- A plain summary of each one
- Its narrative function in the story
Beat 1 · Early Chapter 1
ExternalA letter sealed in clover wax leaves her the orchard, its hives, and a debt it does not name.
Inciting incidentExpectedBeat 6 · Chapter 6
ExternalLord Ashgrave’s men seal the hives until the orchard pays what it owes.
Rising actionExpectedBeat 7 · Late Chapter 7
CharacterShe breaks the seals herself and moves the hives into the old chapel.
Decision pointExpectedConnections
Find the links that are only “and then”.
Familiar looks at each pair of consecutive beats and says how they connect, with a sentence explaining why. “Therefore” and “But” carry a reader forward. A run of “And then” is where a middle starts to sag.
- Therefore, But, Because or And then
- An explanation for every link
- “And then” flagged as worth a second look
Beat connections · Chapters 11–15
Beat 16 · Chapter 15
CharacterShe takes the hives to the midsummer fair and sells the first honey since the funeral.
And then
Worth a lookEvents that follow one another without one causing the next. A But or a Therefore usually reads stronger.
Agency and genre
Check who is driving the story.
Every beat is marked as character-driven or external, and as following or subverting what readers of your genre expect. The map lays them out in two lanes, so a stretch where things only happen to your characters stands out.
